New year, new lawn care guide

Jan 09, 2025

The new year is a great opportunity to take a closer look at our habits and routines and lawn care is no exception. By committing to a few simple–and seasonal–resolutions, you’ll be well on your way to a better yard – and that’s the best goal of all.

To help, our team put together a 2025 Lawn Care Guide so our clients have the information and advice they need to enjoy a healthy lawn year-round. Hello 2025!

Winter

With most greenspaces and gardens blanked in snow this time of year, the best thing for your property is to leave the snow where it falls on your lawn.

If you have the space, avoid piling snow on otherwise grassy areas when removing it from driveways, laneways and high-traffic spaces. The weight of the snow will compact and create heavy ice harming the greenery underneath: even footsteps can cause damage.
If left undisturbed, the snow will accumulate without compacting and act as a protective blanket over your grass.

Spring

For gardeners and lawn care aficionados, spring is the true new year. Begin by raking your lawn thoroughly after the snow melts and before temperatures rise. This will draw much-needed oxygen into the grass and soil at a crucial stage of the growth cycle.

When the overnight temperatures reach 10°C it is time to apply spring fertilizer. Choose a product with a nitrogen rate between 20 and 30. Then, seed the lawn with a grass seed blend compatible with the local environment, typically a full sun, full shade, or half/half in the Ottawa Valley.

Summer

What’s the secret ingredient to summer lawncare? One word: fertilizer. This time of year, we recommend applying a summer mix on a mild day, ideally just before rainfall.

Summer is also the perfect time to aerate the grass. This is also best done when the temperature is under or around 20°C. Our advice? Have the supplies on hand and watch the weather report and enjoy the sunny weather while you wait.

 Fall

At long last, fall. There is a lot of lawn care to undertake when the weather turns cold, and the leaves begin to drop.

The most important step? Rake the leaves. When wet (and surely, they will be) a thick ground cover of leaves will create a too-heavy cover, and it will smother and kill the grass. Apply a fall fertilizer mix and–if possible–aerate the ground once more before snowfall.
